Message from the Gimp

My title refers to the fact that my shin is still royally effed up. The KT Tape is helping, but there is one area near the bottom of my right shin, on the inner part of my shin, that keeps flaring up like crazy. I was going to go to a walk-in orthopedic specialist after work today, but my co-worker told me he had the same issue a few months ago and getting new shoes solved it immediately. Soooo that's what I did. Considering my current shoes are over a year old...it was probably about time. You're supposed to replace them every 300-400 miles so, um, oops. I'll have to keep track on Daily Mile once I start running in the new ones.

Anyway, here they are:

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 12 - in PINK! They will match my KT tape and my iPhone armband. Hooray. They should be here Tuesday, just in time for me to test them out a couple times before my Galloway Miracle Mile. I'm sad because I don't think I'll get in Kitzzy's training group. :[ Their MMs are between 8:30 and 9:30, and I think that fastest I've ever run a mile in was somewhere on the upper half of that. And my shin may make it even more difficult. Sadness. But I'm going to try. And I can always improve my time and join later, so that's good.

I'm only going to run a maximum of two miles at a time until the Galloway program starts - really can't risk the injury. Bleh. My endurance has been pretty good too. I did a 5K distance yesterday and, shin pain aside, it went really well!

In other exciting news, I lost .6 lbs. this week. Not quite on par with my 1.5-lbs.-a-week-for-the-next-six-weeks goal, but for being in a different state the majority of the week, I'll take it. Yurani and I hiked for four hours on Sunday, and ran a couple times, but damn, the air in Denver was THIN. I was so stoked to run because the weather was cool and dry and sunny and gorgeous, but as soon as I started I felt like I was struggling five times as hard to regulate my breathing. It was a pretty big downer, but I think I pushed myself a reasonable amount. I covered two miles Thursday, one Saturday, and then the 9.4-mile (round-trip) hike Sunday. I actually don't have any photos from the hike - I think she has a couple on her camera - so here's a photo of us in front of a wilderness sign with her baby, Benson.

Fun times. I miss her already. But yeah, we ate pretty well. I ended my week using all of my WAPPs and APPs, but not one over. That's a victory to me! She is doing WW too, so we helped each other. We treated ourselves to a few things - most notably, graham-cracker and strawberry-cheesecake ice cream from LIK'S, which I will visit again in my lifetime, so help me). It was ridiculously good. And I had a huge delicious sandwich from this place called Snarf's the night before I flew home. Yummm. But for the most part, it was a lot of this:

I special ordered everywhere we went. Had salads, sushi (and not fried, cream-cheese-filled kinds either), lots of eggs and yogurt, tons of fruit, etc. Very happy with what I was able to accomplish, and I'm glad I am down in weight after two weekends straight of being out of town.

Tonight I made that spaghetti-squash dish again that I told you guys about before, but I remembered to take a photo this time:

It's nothing super fancy or exciting, but it is half a spaghetti squash, 1/2 tbsp. olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and four slices of turkey bacon. Yum! Filled me up, and for only 4 PP.

Since it's the end of the month, I'll go ahead and post my calendar:

Not as good as ~February 2011~, but about the same as ~January 2011~, so I'll take it. In the past couple of weeks, I've only gotten TWO red stickers. That's awesome to look at this way. Next month will be better. I'd love to aim for five red stickers or less. That'd be amazing.

Josh and I are going on a date to White Wolf Cafe Saturday night. We got a great deal: one appetizer to split, one entree each, one glass of beer or wine each, and one dessert to share for $39 from Travelzoo.com. Originally $81 - yay!

Here's the menu. My plan is to get the ahi tuna appetizer to share and skip the sauce (Josh already agreed to get this, so yay - I know he's going to be tempted by those crab cakes, as am I). For my entree, either the catch of the day or the grouper blackened, with double vegetables for a side, and I'm going to ask them not to cook any of it in butter or oil. And I'll have a glass of white wine of some kind. I'll probably let Josh pick the dessert. I kind of hope he picks the Peanut Butter Brownie Ice Cream Pie but at the same time, I don't. Lol. That's six delicious words in one dish, and that spells trouble. We may go downtown afterward as well, so I'm allowing myself the flexibility of using the APPs I plan to earn during the week (10), plus 19 more if I need to, so I can have 30 WAPP left by the end of the week. I really, REALLY want to hold onto those 30, but I also want to enjoy myself Saturday evening. So that's the plan.

Monday, I'm going to do yoga at my co-worker Liz's house and she's making a healthy dinner. I'll have to remember to coordinate with her beforehand to make sure I know what's she making, at least. I told her I'm sorry if I'm crazy and bring my food scale, lol. She understands.

Time for bed. I can't hang past 10 anymore these days. I blame Josh. Night all!

That salad looks so friggin' delicious. And look at all the color. Good for you for stickin' to your plan for the most part. I find it hard to stay within my plan on vacation, because I'm a big fan of trying the local specialties and what not.

I hope the new shoes work out of you. You're supposed to replace them every 6 months, I believe, but I never do, either. And, it's too late now, but FYI - I have Zappos VIP. Which means that I can get free one-day shipping on any shoes. They have those same shoes at the same price, plus they also let you return the shoes for a 365-day window. I really like Zappos. Oh well, you can remember for next time :)

Also, we wear the same shoe - holla!! I love that darn shoe, and it solves the majority of my feet problems.

I've been to White Wolf, and it isn't bad. I think paying $40 is a lot for dinner though. But I'm pretty cheap ;)

It was amazing. I LOVE when restaurants have a variety of fruits and veggies I can add for 0 PP. Eight times out of 10 they get my order wrong, because I always mix and match the toppings of different salads, lol. I'm sure they're like WTF, but I'm sorry dude, I don't want your sugared pecans or your cheese or bacon, but I want the chicken and avocado that comes on that salad, and also the fruit that comes on this other salad! They hardly ever give me an issue, but sometimes they charge me extra (they did at this place). I try and argue that I'm not costing them any more since I'm simply substituting and not adding, and sometimes it does work, but whatevs.

I feel you about trying local specialties! It depends on the place for me. If I'm on a work trip to Random City, N.C., it's easier for me to stay on track. But when I'm visiting my family in NOLA, um, yeah...you bet your ass I'm having a beignet, lol. Oh food.

Thanks. I think it really depends on the mileage and the climate and quality of the shoes and whatnot more so than the time, but six months is probably a good benchmark if you're a casual runner. I think with my training it will be more like 3-4 months, so we'll see. I actually got free two-day shipping on mine, which isn't too bad! I'll have to hit you up if I need them in a bind. I have a discount code but it didn't work on the brand I got, boo.

Yay! Do you have it in pink too? :p I'm excited.

White Wolf is one of our favorites, but yeah we don't go too much because it's a little pricey. But for a nice dinner out including appetizer, two entrees, a dessert, and two drinks, $39 is a steal for a fairly nice, non-chain place! Granted, we have to tip on the full bill, but still saving a ton. I don't mind spending for quality and special outings.

I'm always switching ingredients when I'm in a restaurant. A good server shouldn't care and will get the order right (that doesn't mean they always do). I ask for a lot of stuff on the side, too. Tom and I share salads and he loves olives and hates onions, and I'm the exact opposite. So we always get those on the side, along with bunches of other things. And I always try to get spring mix, if I can. One time, at California Pizza Kitchen, I wanted to change out my romaine lettuce for spring mix and the guy wanted to upcharge me $1.50 - for LETTUCE!!! No f'ing way.

I've found that even Random City USA has SOME food specialty. I'm such a sucker for that kind of marketing. I need to go visit "the land of the salads" or something, LOL.

I don't have that shoe in pink. I actually have it in black and wear it all the time as my primary shoe, which you are also not supposed to do.

I usually only have a problem if I go to a place where it's already pre-prepared, or a really nice restaurant that doesn't allow substitutions. I tend to avoid the former, and the latter is usually for really special occasions I'm splurging on anyway, so it's fine. Yeah, they charge out the ass for nothing. Lame.

LOL what would that even be? Probably Portland.

Oh OK. Yeah Josh wears his running shoes all the time and to work. He needs new ones badly.

Woot new shoes! Love the potential of a new pair and the easy way to get over both the idea of going through the process and dropping a benjamin: If I was to offer you the chance to spend the evening at home and pay you $100, would you let me whack your shin with a stick a few times a week? ...didn't think so ;-)

Bigger hooray for the loss! Gotta love when you are on vacation and the scale goes DOWN. Then again, when you are kept moving and eating the good stuff. The spaghetti squash thing does look bangarang.

It looks like you had a great time visiting Yurani and Benson. That stuff is good for the soul.

Yeah I'm excited to try them out! Haven't treated myself to a new pair in a long time...too long, apparently. LOL! I'm coming off of spending $300 for the marathon and training program combined, so I've been hesitant about buying gear, so your analogy makes me feel better about dropping the money for sure. :p

Definitely! And yes, I think Rufio would approve of my dish. :p Apparently they're making a movie just about his story? I'm excited slash apprehensive...

I really did. Aside from the quality time (which was much needed and loved and soul-quenching), it pushed my body with the hiking. I was sore for a couple days, which was a nice change. I haven't been pushing my limits much lately, so it was nice to do that for a change. Thanks!

Sorry your shin still hates you. If it's flaring up like crazy, I'd stay off it and let the inflammation go down, at least until the shoes arrive. You won't lose anything with the week off but could make it worse. You could walk instead or if you do run, stop and walk as soon as it hurts. Don't push through the pain. Running can be uncomfortable, yes, but not painful. If you are worried about not being active, you can also bike or elliptical or whatever else you like doing that is low impact on the leg.

My group is actually only between 8:30 and 9:00 :-/ (it's similar to last year, which was 8:15 - 9:00). If you are close, you may be able to sneak in, but Debbie is excellent and you will be in good hands with Roadrunners. Specially with your shin issues, you don't want to end up in a faster group and struggle, but you can always join us later. And we can keep in touch because if your group is doing the long runs too fast then you might as well come to mine :)

And congrats on the loss!

Maybe you're right. I am going to at least walk, and maybe I'll do the elliptical. We'll see how I'm feeling. My shin is fine right now - it only hurt the night after I ran, so I don't know. I know I can still lose weight if I stick to WW, but it'll be a lot harder without the activity.

Damn! Yeah I would rather do that anyway than push myself too hard at the beginning. I will get there eventually.

Thanks! :-D

I hope the sneakers help! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

That salad with fruit, avocado, egg, and meat looks AMAZING! And it's not that huge of a picture, but if you want a quick and dirty way to resize photos without actually resizing them, just use:

[img src="http://blahblahblah.com/michaeljacksonspenis.jpg" height="65%" width="65%"], obviously replacing [ ] with < >. And the percent can be ANYTHING, not just 65; sometimes I resize it, hit "preview entry" to check the size before I post it, and adjust up or down accordingly. It's not the BEST way to resize an image, but it's quick and dirty and gets the job done.

Well, while it not be the holy grail that was February 2011, that's still a pretty awesome calendar, bb. It's a HUGE step in the right direction, and considering all of the traveling/events you had going on, that is a HUGE victory.

I'm glad you're planning ahead for the dinner tomorrow (and think of me -- that's where I met Josh! And talked a lot about his creepy coworker, huh.), and giving yourself ten PP in addition to an extra 19 if you need them. I think that's smart and realistic. If you manage to not use them, that's awesome, but you know that the cushion is there, should you need it.

Haha, I did the same thing when I went to my friend Andrea's a couple weeks ago! I didn't break out the food scale, but she's on WW too, so I was like, "WHAT ARE THE POINTS FOR THIS? WHAT ABOUT THIS? HOW BIG OF A PIECE OF CHICKEN ARE YOU GIVING ME? WAIT, THAT'S TOO MUCH SUGAR FREE PUDDING! I ONLY WANT A TABLESPOON OR TWO!" Yeah.

OMG, on my nights off and vacations, I'm in bed early, too! It's such a guilty pleasure, going to bed early. Such the opposite of what I was doing when I was a teenager, ugh.

Jun. 3rd, 2012 02:44 pm (UTC)
Thanks, I do too. I needed to get them anyway, so hopefully they save me pain and a doctor's bill.

It was so so good. THANK YOU for the resizing tip! That will save me a lot of time. I'm gonna go do it now.

That's true, especially the second half. June is two yellows so far...I want to get a blue today, but we'll see. I started the day with a Klondike bar so um...lol. But I'm not hungry so that's a win.

HAHA ABEL! Josh has since transferred to another store but I can tell he totally misses that creeper. I ended last night with 20 WAPP left, so with the rest of my activity this week I am hoping to end this week with 25 left. Here's hoping.

Yay it's great to have friends who understand! And um, tell me about it re: bed. I remember staying up until 4 am like it was nothing, in AOL chat rooms. Fail!

Love you too, bb!
